About Dragonsoul

Dragonsoul is my passion project, my joy, my love of the craft, and sometimes the sinking sensation that I may have bit off more than I can chew. Regardless, I am committed to this setting, and this world, and while I won’t share too much too soon, I truly want those interested to be able to get a taste of what is to come.

The Continent of Draigtir

When crafting this world, when writing these characters, I really wanted to explore dragons in a way I feel hasn’t been done often. Many fantastic stories explore dragons as villains, or as rare, nearly extinct, and certainly with the dragon rider trope front and center. From Eragon to The Bound and the Broken to the Songs of Chaos, and of course the ever popular Fourth Wing, dragon fiction is alive and well.

What I wanted to write, however, was something else. I didn’t want the traditional dragon rider trope. Instead, I wanted to pursue something else. What if dragons and humans live together, where humans were treated as equals (even if from a power level, they most certainly were not?) What if the magic system was inherently tied to the history of the dragons and the legacy of a world turned upside down by their arrival?

Then of course, I wanted to define the realms, the cultures within. What does it look like when you have a kingdom, or rather, a series of kingdoms, inherently bound to dragonkind? What happens when you have kingdoms that reject dragons altogether?

Draigtir, and Dragonsoul as a whole, carries an element of that classic medieval fantasy, yet with a bit of a different style. Those High Realms as they are sometimes called, whether in league with dragons, or ruled by them, cast a different silhouette than those ruggedly individualistic free realms that believe humans control their own destiny.

My goal was to highlight how different a kingdom might look when supported by the wondrous and awe-inspiring dragons of the world.

Make no mistake, the people living in those regions probably live fuller and healthier lives than those living without dragons, but that does not make it perfect, for as with all things in a good fantasy, there is conflict waiting around the corner. In the east, an empire built on self-sufficiency and a desire for expansion may have cracked the code on how to defeat the dragon-ruled realms. War is coming as it so often does in any epic fantasy.

A Story of Hope

I love grimdark and I love gritty and grimy fantasy. For me, however, I prefer to read that content, not write it. I have always been a more hopeful individual when it comes to my perspective on people, even if these current times may be rough.

Dragonsoul, regardless of what is going on in the world today, will be a story and saga about hope, about the potential of what humanity is capable of. I hope you join me on this ride.
